What does Inefficiencies represent?
Overall, Inefficiencies show where time is lost within the project and thereby gives developers a way to know what they should be working on.
Average Time Lost per Pull Request Stage
What is Average Time Lost per Pull Request Stage?
It shows how the Lost Time is distributed in a Cycle Time Overview format.
What does Average Time Lost per Pull Request Stage do?
Much like the earlier Lost Time metrics, this metric can be used to see the productivity of the team.
Why use Average Time Lost per Pull Request Stage?
This is a very useful metric when combined with the earlier Lost Time metrics as it is a drilled-down version of them that shows exactly when work is being lost. This can then be focused on further with the team.
Time to Close Distribution
What is Time to Close Distribution?
Time to Close Distribution is a graph that groups how long it took to close individual PRs.
What does Time to Close Distribution do?
This metric can be used to find anomalies in the PRs if the Cycle Time seems very skewed, and beyond that it is a way to monitor productivity as most PRs should be within the healthy ranges, and marked as blue.
Industry benchmark: Experimental work that took less than 72 hours is generally acceptable.
Why use Time to Close Distribution Stage?
It is a useful metric to use alongside Average Cycle Time and Long-Running PRs, as it can further shed light on why either of the other 2 metrics seem to be too healthy or unhealthy.
State Before Close
What is State Before Close?
The State before Close graph has three categories for when PRs are discarded. These are: Work discarded Before Review, During Review and After Approval.
What does State Before Close do?
This metric is an indicator of the knowledge base and efficiency of the team. Most discards should happen during the During Review period as the PRs will have gone through the proper cycle before being discarded. However situations may lead towards it being discarded during the Before Review and After Approval. If these occur its important to look into if the team has the required training and knowledge for what they are working with, as a poor knowledge base may lead to them discarding work Before Review or After Approval.
Why use State Before Close?
Its one of the main metrics that can be used to tackle two issues, namely knowledge base and the efficiency of the team, which, if fixed, will boost velocity and productivity.
Wasted Work Types
What is Wasted Work Types?
The Wasted Work Types metric shows whether Discarded PRs were New work or old/Maintenance work.
What does Wasted Work Types do?
This metric is an indicator of the innovation within the team. Most discarded work should be new as that shows innovation and growth within the team whereas discarding maintenance work shows a lack of knowledge within the predefined systems.
Please keep in mind however, if discarded work is overwhelmingly new, it could also show that requirements are not being properly communicated.
Why use Wasted Work Types?
Its another way to find both growth and knowledge gaps within the team, and can be used to boost productivity.
